The Dogs of Justice: Who We Are and Why It Matters

We call ourselves the Dogs of Justice — not as a boast, but as a commitment. Here is what that name means, where it comes from, and why we chose to carry it.

Names carry weight.

When we chose to call ourselves the Dogs of Justice, we knew we were choosing something that would raise eyebrows. Dogs are not typically the symbol of nonprofits. You expect doves, hands clasped together, abstract swooshes of color suggesting movement and hope.

We chose the hound. And we chose it deliberately.

Where the Name Comes From

The Baskerville hound is one of literature’s great symbols of inexorable pursuit. In the legend, it cannot be reasoned with, cannot be delayed, cannot be bribed or misdirected. It runs. It follows the truth of what it has been set to find, regardless of darkness, regardless of the moors, regardless of who would prefer it stopped.

That is what we aspire to be.

Not frightening — but unstoppable. Not ruthless — but relentless. Not operating from anger, but from conviction so deep and so clear that no obstacle, no bureaucracy, no opposition can redirect us from the pursuit.

What “Dogs” Means to Us

In many communities, the phrase “dogs” carries layers of meaning. People who run toward danger instead of away from it. People who show up — again and again — when showing up is hard. People with loyalty so fierce it transcends self-interest.

We are those people.

The founders of the Baskerville Foundation are community members, advocates, attorneys, educators, and ordinary people who looked at the world and refused to accept that this is as good as it gets. We don’t have unlimited resources. We don’t have the backing of major institutions. What we have is each other, and an absolute refusal to stop.

Why an Organization Needs Identity

A nonprofit without a clear sense of identity becomes a service provider. It processes applications. It distributes funds. It completes its quarterly reports. None of that is bad — but it isn’t enough.

We believe that justice work requires moral clarity. It requires the willingness to say, out loud, that something is wrong. To name the harm. To stand with those who have been harmed, not just in the aftermath, but in the middle of the fight.

The Dogs of Justice are not neutral observers of injustice. We are participants in its correction.

A Living Identity

The “Dogs of Justice” is not just a tagline. It is the standard every person who joins this Foundation agrees to hold themselves to. When you become a founding member, you don’t just get a tax receipt. You join a community of people who have made a commitment to pursue justice — in their neighborhoods, in their institutions, in their own lives.

The hound runs. So do we.
